Islam and Women: Sayyida Al-Hurra

By Maria E. Matta (Alastor)

This StoryMap is about the stereotypes that Muslim women face, how they came about, what they are, and most importantly how they can be disproven. To do this, the StoryMap takes you through the events of the Reconquista, how the Muslims were not only pushed out, but culturally snuffed out altogether. It will focus on how the Reconquista and Convivencia are the root cause of the birth of negative stereotypes against Muslims. Additionally, it will explain what exactly are the stereotypes that Muslim women face, and furthermore, how they can be disproven. Also, this StoryMap follows a case study, a Muslim noblewoman Sayyida Al-Hurra. She became governor of Tétouan, married into the Wattasid dynasty, and was revered throughout North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula as a fearsome naval leader. This StoryMap goes over the ways in which common women stand in opposition to these stereotypes, while also comparing how women of other religions fare, and finally discussing the true root of the issue behind women’s oppression.
