The Influence of Andalusian Scholarship on the Movement and Development of Western Philosophy

By Jada Rodriguez

The following storymap examines the influence of four Andalusian scholars on the movement and progression of Aristotle’s works during, and after the 12th-13th century. Each slide is focused on a particular location related to, or significant to the scholars that will be discussed. As we visited several cities in Morocco and Spain to study the medieval history and memory of Muslims, Jews, and Christians, the following cities we visited will be included: Córdoba, Marrakech, Fes, and Toledo. Athens, Baghdad, and France are also pivotal in, not only Aristotle’s life story, but also in the development of his works after the fall of Rome. This storymap alludes to the interconnectedness of what we often refer to as “western” and “oriental” thinking. What we now understand to be “western” thought has much of its foundations and philosophical roots in “oriental” ideas, cultures, and religions.
