The Jewish Story: Amazigh Jewry

By Daniel Zappin

This project is about a less commonly talked about but equally important branch of Jewish history. It is an overview of the origins, migration, culture, and achievements of the native Moroccan Jewish community, the Amazigh Jews. Jews have been a part of Moroccan history for thousands of years and play in a role in the creation of Moroccan national identity. This community has also had lasting impacts on the global Jewish community culturally and as a case of coexistence with the Islamic world. This project focuses on the indigenous Jewish community, called the Toshavim, those who were in Morocco before the migration of Sephardic Jews from Spain due to expulsion in 1492.
